Asian slam for ladies' golf
21 September 2012
When Korea's Shin Jiyai won the Women's British Open golf tournament last weekend, that made for an "Asian Slam" as all four women's 2012 grand slam golf tournaments have now been won by Asian girls. Her compatriots Sun-Young Yoo and Na Yeon Choi won the Kraft Nabisco Championship and US Women's Open respectively, while China's Shashan Feng won the LPGA Championship.
On top of that several other Asian girls are in the top ten money winners' list: Park, Inbee (Korea) , Miyazato, Ai (Japan), Tseng, Yani (Taiwan), Miyazato, Mika (Japan), and Ryu, So Yeon (Korea).
There are many things that could be said about Asia's domination of women's golf. What is most striking to me is that these Asian girls come from male-dominated societies, which provide limited economic opportunities to their women. If Asia really wants to realize the Asian Century, it should give their girls a chance. If their golf performance is any indicator of their economic potential, they would be very successful!
