North Koreans wed in Toronto
01 October 2012
15 North Korean refugee couples filed into Toronto City Hall a few weeks back for a group wedding. In these chambers, normally used for council meetings, many expressions of love, joy and liberation were to be heard.
"Canada is paradise". "We escaped from hell to heaven”. “North Korea is a sick country .. they cannot torture their own people and let the people starve to death”.
Canada may well be the world's most welcoming country for migrants like these North Koreans. One tragedy is that they are more warmly welcomed in Canada than in South Korea, where they are all too often treated like second class citizens.
